Current Work
Master of Science in Physics, Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration and D. Litt. ( Honoris causa) ,Dr. Arun Kumar Rath was educated in the Utkal , Delhi , Birmingham and Bradford Universities .He joined the Indian Administrative Service ( IAS) in 1973 after a brilliant academic career.
During his distinguished career as a civil servant spanning over three decades, Dr. Rath made significant contributions to Indian administration and the corporate world. As Joint Secretary Department of Public Enterprises Govt of India Dr Rath was in charge of formulating policy for central public sector enterprises of India and introduced number of initiatives for better corporate governance and social responsibility of the public sector. As the Additional Secretary Ministry of Steel, Dr Rath served as Director in the Boards of five leading public sector steel companies SAIL, NMDC , MECON and Vizag Steel & KIOCL.
As Secretary to Govt. of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Dr. Rath contributed to enactment of the long-awaited Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 .
After superannuation from IAS Dr Rath served as Dean & Professor of Public Policy at the Management Development Institute, Gurgaon (2009-12) and set up the School of Public Policy & Management in MDI Gurgaon .He served as Dean Executive Education & International Relations & Professor of Corporate Governance & Strategy in International Management Institute New Delhi (2012-17)
Dr Rath is currently Chairman , Centre of Excellence for Corporate Governance & Social Responsibility in the International Management Institute, Bhubaneswar since May 2017 & Professor of Strategy & Corporate Governance at IMI Bhubaneswar & IMI New Delhi.
Dr Rath served as Independent Director in Coal India ,Mahanadi Coalfield , and Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals and as Chairman of various Board sub committees.
Dr Rath published books and research articles and presented conference papers at numerous national and international conferences .His book “Towards Better Corporate Governance : Independent Directors in Boardroom” has been widely acclaimed .
Dr Rath has travelled widely around the world and represented India at number of international conferences and events. His two books “ Antarctica Diary and Other Travel Stories ” in Odia and English are milestones in travel literature.
He is Fellow of the All India Management Association New Delhi , and Distinguished Fellow of Institute of Directors, New Delhi .He served as President of Patna Management Association and Delhi Management Associations and as Chairman Management Development Services of All India Management Association New Delhi.
Dr Rath has conducted over 75 Management Development Programs in areas of corporate governance , CSR, sustainable development, business ethics , enterprise risk management,business ethics, project management and public enterprise management in MDI Gurgaon , IMI Delhi and IMI Bhubaneswar and trained over three thousand executives and managers including over two hundred CEOs and Directors of Indian companies . He has trained over five hundred executives and officials of governments and global enterprises from over hundred countries of the world. He teaches corporate governance, business ethics, CSR, sustainable development and public enterprise management.
