Dr. Kalra has a Masters degree in Psychology from Lucknow University and a Ph.D. from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences,(TISS), Mumbai (Bombay). Before joining IMI in July 2009, he was with MDI for about 13 years from October 1996 to June 2009. Earlier to that he was with IIM – L from May 1985 to October 1996, NITIE Mumbai from April 1978 to May 1985.At all these places he has experience of conducting large number of programs in the behavioral science areas. He has been a guest faculty to a number of public and private sector organizations.  He has also got experience of conducting programs for senior and top level government officers and has been a speaker in many national and international conferences and conventions, both in India and abroad. He has generally been rated very highly by the students. He was rated as the most popular professor by the MDI students in the Business Schools survey done by the Mint (Sept. 12, 2008 Issue, page B26), he was also given the Best Faculty Award in the student’s choice category by the PGHR batch of 2009.

Besides teaching, training and research He is also actively involved in consulting for various organizations, such as Power Trading Corporation (PTC), Tourism Finance Corporation of India (TFCI), Indo-Gulf Fertilizers, HSS etc. and also for some public schools in the areas of OD & Structure, recruitment & selection, appraisals etc.

He has been the Vice-Chairman of Indian Society for Training and Development, Bombay Chapter and the Co-chairman of the Editorial Board of the Indian Journal of Training and Development, He has also been Member – Board of Studies, Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad , Member – Board of Research Studies, F M S, Aligarh Muslim University, Member Board of Governors, School of Management, IGNOU, Member,(Board & Academic Council), National Academy of Training and Development,(NATAD), Council Member, Educational Technology and Management Academy (ETMA).  Before taking up teaching in 1978, he had worked in the corporate sector (RCF and TCS, Bombay) in the area of Human Resource Development for over five years.  He has published about 80 articles in various national and international journals like Economic and Political Weekly, Indian Journal of Social Work, Indian Journal of Industrial Relations, Journal of Applied Social Psychology (U.S.A), Asian Case Research Journal, Journal of European Industrial Training (JEIT) etc. In his paper in JEIT he has developed a new concept of Human Potential Management (HPM). One of his papers on ‘Self Development’ has won the Best Paper Award. He has also been Raman Munjal Chair Professor at MDI till August 2003.  He has widely traveled and has been to Europe, South East Asia and USA where he has also been a visiting scholar at Fairleigh Dickinson University, New Jersey, USA.  He has also held various administrative positions like Professor & Head of OB & General Management Group at NITIE Bombay, Chairman-Admissions, Chairman-MDPs at IIM, Lucknow and Chairman-Placements, Chairman PGHR at MDI, besides also being Acting/Officiating Director at IIM-Lucknow. He is presently interested in the areas of Self oriented HRD Interventions, HPM and cross-cultural dimensions of leadership.
