Omfed Visit

On 28th October, students of IMI Bhubaneswar visited OMFED (Odisha Milk Federation ). OMFED was started in 1985 as a state run cooperative society to promote, produce, process and market milk and milk products. The Bhubaneswar plant of OMFED dairy is the largest plant in the state with the capacity of 2.5 lakh liters of milk every day.

The Batch of 2017-19 was pleasantly surprised by hearing the capacity volume. The visit was organized by Professor Devesh Baid to learn about the functioning of the Dairy and the cost associated with the various processes followed in the dairy.

With the help of plant supervisors, the students got to learn the numerous milk products that are prepared in the plant facility and are then distributed all over the state. Farmers are paid based on the quality of the milk, which is tested in state of the art laboratories.

The curious students asked multiple questions and the manager answered them all in a delighted manner. The facility process milk into Dahi, Paneer, Rasgulla, Gulab Jamun, Sweetend Milk etc.

The facility has cold storage and chilling spaces where temperature goes down from -3 to -45 degree Celsius. It also has an ice cream center, where ice cream is made. It was a delight to see how ice cream is made and everyone turned to a little kid when they saw the delicious ice cream being made.

At the end of the day we left to IMI with vast knowledge and a greater wealth of memories.
